Ubuntu Gutsy: Lookin’ better than ever!
October 15, 2007
The day draws near for Gutsy’s release (Ubuntu 7.10), and after running the betas and release candidate for a while, I’m quite impressed.
Gutsy feels snappier than previous releases; the whole thing is put together very nicely. Updates have been coming in a steady stream, and Firefox and MPlayer are up to their current versions — two crucial pieces of software for me.
The nVidia drivers installed without a problem for me, and turning on desktop effects was simple — System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects. I have mine set to enable ‘extra’. The look is very subtle and doesn’t get in the way of every day operation. I wish the desktop cube was turned on by default, but hey — you can’t have it all.
Connecting to my company’s VPN was quick and easy. I installed the package “network-manager-pptp” and set up the profile for our Microsoft PPTP VPN server. I was in business in minutes, browsing our corporate file shares from Nautilus.
What are your impressions so far?

I’m a little worried about Gutsy. It has some great technologies, but I think that some of the changes were drastic, pushed up from Hungy Hippo … er … I mean Hardy Heron . Things that might have been put off until the next release were crowbarred into Gutsy so that the bugs could be worked out in time for Hardy’s LTS version.
The number one of these is Compiz being installed and activated by default: It still doesn’t work properly for largenumbers of people. I know that the public debate focuses on the “Wow!” factor, but I believe the reason it got fast-tracked was to increase the number of testers, making it work well in Hardy.
There are others, including a new X configuration tool and change in printer driver manager.
I’m sure the stabiity of Gutsy will be less than Feisty, just as Breezy (5.10) was less stable than Hoary (5.04), in preparation for Dapper (6.06)

I have been using Gutsy as my main desktop for a couple of months now and I have to say, that I have not seen any large show stopping bugs. I like that Compiz is activated by default, if you don’t have a card that supports it, then you don’t see anything except a regular desktop (done this countless of times in a VM and on an old laptop with a very old ATI card).
Looking forward to Hardy Heron

It was ok… the beta’s crashed my HP box … I am still on 7.01 .. (I started using Ubuntu at 5.04)

I’ve been using Gutsy for two weeks now. I did an upgrade on my desktop (which is my secondary machine) and it had a few issues. No show stoppers but Compiz acted a little funky. All my settings and documents survived.
I did a clean install on my main machine which is a laptop and I haven’t had any issues at all. It was much quicker than the upgrade I had done on my desktop. No problems with Compiz or anything else out of the box. It actually fixed several problems that I’ve had with Feisty. I also agree that Gutsy is snappier. I’m very happy with it.

Upgrade from Fiesty to Gusty was a bummer (my fault not Gusty’s).
Full install was breeze on my Gateway Laptop.
Compiz is just fine.
Wifi Connection loose with Sleep / Suspend & no restore seem to be the only issues at this moment.
I just love the constant stream of updates (had gentoo for 3 years

That is not “earthy” (the wallpaper) it’s based on the skin of an elephant.

Compiz doesn’t seem as stable as Beryl in Feisty. I had no problems at all with Beryl. When I updated to Gutsy, Compiz worked pretty well but would occasionally just crap out. So I updated that package and had some weird issues. (Taskbar disappearing etc…) So I updated again and the issue has gone away, but again yesterday Compiz just crapped out on me.
AND I WANT MY DAMN SNOW PLUGIN!:) I cannot get a working snow plugin on Compiz which really sucks. (My kids love it.)

I like using Ubuntu but I hate the ugly brown and the stupid version naming. Can’t they just use numbers?
October 16th, 2007 at 4:26 pm
I just started using Ubuntu as my primary desktop and I like it so far. I used to switch between Windows and Linux every so often and stuck with Windows because things like networking and stuff didn’t give me too many problems. After a failed attempt at dual booting Windows and Linux again I finally just decided to stick with Linux, Ubuntu specifically and it pretty much worked right after the install. I had to get my wireless card to work but all I had to do for that was an update and it’s been working for around a week now with no problems. I have no plans of ever switching back to Windows again. The only problem I’m having with Ubuntu now is getting DVDs to play but I’m working on it. I’ve tried some of the how to’s but nothing has worked so far.

I like the naming of the distributions. It makes it easy to search for things like “Gutsy Ubuntu compiz-manager”. Version numbers don’t seem to work as well in searches.
October 16th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
easy to install and run, great driver support(for me anyways) no fighting with config files it just works which is what i want.
No native games that peak my interest, sad i would like stop dual booting windows all together.

They DO use numbers… the next release is called Ubuntu 7.10. Users refer to the releases by their development names because they are easier to remember and kinda fun. And the orange/brown desktop look is very nice imo.

You forgot another VERY IMPORTANT feature. It has NTFS support out of the box!!! Both READ AND WRITE!!!
Woot ^_^.

I wonder if those fonts still look like from the 80s.
I hope they do a better job, this time, because many people are desperately waiting for nicer linux fonts. Right now, all linux distros suck in fonts.

I switched to ubuntu at fiesty. This is going to be my first major upgrade. I’m really excited about all the changes that Gusty brings. Lets just hope that the upgrade goes well on my laptop!
October 16th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Yeah Ubuntu releases are named with their release date(7.10 releases in October ’07, Hardy Heron will be 8.04-April ’08), and “coded named” after animals-Dapper Drake, Edgy Eft, Fiesty Fawn, Gutsy Gibbon…
October 16th, 2007 at 8:57 pm
I still use Dapper on my servers, hey it is supported until ’09, and by then hopefully the Heron will be “Server-friendly”. I have 3 Ubuntu distros in VM’s(a nightmare, 15 VM’s and 1 Apple VM on a Vista Laptop!!) and my fav is still Ubuntu Ultimate- http://www.ubuntusoftware.info – TRY IT! –not at all reccomended for servers–

Will try out gutsy soon on a test machine, probably will leave main at Feisty as I’m a fan of If its not broke, Dont fix it.
Brandon, easy way to get dvd support, use VLC, its in the package manager.
and hey, Blog Oh Joe, try these out. sure to be something you like.

All reports good here, I’ve been using Gutsy for approx 3 or 4 months (through beta), and I’ve had no problems.
If anything, when its actually released I may do a clean install, as its a fairly good way of removing clutter every so often. I’ve also got a muffed up install of Compiz and Beryl and they’re not playing nice, so it’d be good to see it working correctly.
Might even give Kubuntu a go, its been a while since I used KDE, but from all reports I’ve heard Kubuntu has matured nicely and is a much more polished product than the last time I tried it (pre dapper).

I have been running Gutsy pre-release for a few months now. I’m really happy with it. It’s been interesting watching the changes as things developed. A fews breakages were to be expected and that’s sure to have left a few quirks. I’ll be doing a fresh install. I’m really excited for the final tomorrow.
As for some features in Gutsy being too early. I’ll keeps the kids computer on Feisty, unless they beg me for the cool stuff. Which I expect want take long. They already know how to spin the cube, transparent the windows, zoom the screen, and fire write on the screen.
It’s not looking sticking with a six year old OS like XP just to avoid Vista which is in Commercial Beta. Feisty is only 6 months old. And there has been no nasties like dropping a whole release (aka. Longhorn) because of inabilities to develop what was promised.

“I like using Ubuntu but I hate the ugly brown and the stupid version naming. Can’t they just use numbers?”
Yes, the monkey brown spoils it all
October 17th, 2007 at 11:25 am
Why does everyone complain about the brown? My ubuntu has no brown (right now) because I changed it. It’s so easy. Go to GnomeLook and D/L something different… For free! That’s part of the charm. Put the docks anywhere you like make as many as you like… Use AWN, or install KDE or FluxBox, or not, it’s YOUR CHOICE.
Play, enjoy, don’t hate for no reason.
It’s YOUR ubuntu, do with it as you please.
Do you still use the Windoze stock, out of the box theme?
The release, as ohers have pointed out, is 7.10, “Gutsy Gibbon” is the code name. Don’t use it if you don’t like it.

i had some trouble installing nvidia drivers in the beta, and i just gave up till the final is out then i will reinstall.
on another note, what happens after they reach Z?
October 17th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
By the time they get to Z, A will be so long ago they can start recycling letter for differant animals but the numbers keep going…

Ah! That’s for the wordpress stats plugin. It doesn’t show up for logged in users; hence I never saw it.
Good eye, NSJ!

Holy Crap! NextSteve is right. You gotta look way down in the corner and it’s real small, but there nontheless. As for Gutsy, I haven’t done any upgrades yet. I’ll wait till tomorrow when they ‘officially’ release it, and then I’ll probably upgrade from Feisty.

Just thought I’d post back again after trying Gutsy from a clean install. I’m very impressed, the improvements in general automated goodness and ease of use are enormous compared to my Feisty upgraded to Gutsy install.
It was probably due to my hacking and breaking, but Gutsy really seems to just work. The network-manager has never worked for me, and I’d always fallen back on a manual setup with wpasupplicant to get it to connect to the wireless network I wanted with WPA2 support. On top of this, the restricted modules feature seems to work great, and Nvidia/Compiz works from the get go (though, this has been like this for a while though).
I love it!
