Can anyone enlighten me on its purpose, language of origin? If you paste this character and begin typing, your writing is transformed to right-to-left format. Weird!

    it’s not that character. It’s one of the ones you also copy when copying that character (see below).

    There are several Unicode characters that control text direction, starting at U+200E. See [wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_control_characters#Bidirectional_text_control).

    I just tested it on adium, and it flipped the text. For the record, I’m on OSX 10.4.

    maybe it is for writing in certain languages. like the ones that read from right to left rather than left to right. I think the Quran is written in right to left (Arabic I think).

    yeah, but arabic has a completely different alphabet, and when it’s transliterated, it is done left to right.

    It’s not that character, it’s the huge amount of control characters you also put in.

    As noted about, the backwards type comes from the other characters, not from the circle of commas. The circle of commas (҉) is the Unicode character U+0489 COMBINING CYRILLIC MILLIONS SIGN. It actually is supposed to combine with the character before it, surrounding it with them crazy commas. It is a historic character that isn’t much in current use.     The character is right-to-left-override, as was mentioned previously (not right-to-left-embedding). Right to left embedding (\u202B) will make the line direction right to left but leave the character direction alone– generally you’ll see the effect on punctuation at the end of the sentence. Right to left override (\u202E) forces each character to be treated as though it were right-to-left and makes them follow each other in right-to-left order.

    I pasted it into text edit on my mac, it made the text backwards, but instead of looking like a question mark it changed into a backwards r with a sqaure around it.
